Mission Beach Sunset Cruises and Private Charters at a Glance
A Mission Beach sunset cruise is one of the most relaxed ways to see the Family Islands, the small group of continental islands that sit just off the Mission Beach coastline. You get the islands, the long sweep of beach and the evening light without needing to plan a full day trip.
Mission Beach is a coastal village in Far North Queensland, about 140km south of Cairns, where World Heritage rainforest meets the Great Barrier Reef. Most boats leave from Clump Point at the northern end of town, and the islands are only a short run across the water.
This guide covers the sunset and private charter options we could confirm, what each includes, listed prices, and who each one suits. Information checked October 2026.
- Shared sunset cruise: Mission Beach Adventures, about 1.5 hours, from AU$115 per person.
- Private sunset dinner cruise: QuickCoast, departs 5.30pm, listed at AU$2,695 for the charter.
- Private island and reef charters: QuickCoast, Wildside Adventures and Mission Beach Charters, from about AU$700 to AU$5,916 depending on the trip.
- Main departure point: Clump Point, Mission Beach.
What Are the Family Islands?
The Family Islands are a group of islands off Mission Beach, most of which are protected as Family Islands National Park, managed by the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service. Dunk Island is the largest. The group also includes Bedarra (Richards Island), Wheeler and Coombe Islands, and Smith, Bowden and Hudson Islands, along with a handful of smaller rocks and islets.
The traditional names reflect a family: Dunk (Coonanglebah) is known as the father, Bedarra the mother, Wheeler and Coombe the twins, and Smith, Bowden and Hudson the triplets. Dunk Island is traditional country of the Djiru people.
According to Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, boating around the national park is a popular activity, and visitors may see dugongs, turtles and plenty of birdlife. Boaties are asked to slow down over seagrass and anchor in sand, away from reefs.
Mission Beach Sunset Cruise Options
There are two quite different ways to do a sunset trip from Mission Beach: a shared cruise where you buy a seat, or a private charter where you book the whole boat.
Mission Beach Adventures Sunset Cruise (shared)
The Mission Beach Adventures Sunset Cruise is a relaxed cruise along the Mission Beach beachfront. It runs for about 1.5 hours and is listed from AU$115.
- Included: a glass of bubbly or beer, and a grazing box served on board. Extra drinks are available to buy.
- What to bring: comfortable clothes and a camera.
- Good for: couples, small celebrations and anyone who wants a sunset on the water without paying for a whole boat.
The booking page does not list a departure time or meeting point, so confirm both with the operator when you book. Sunset times shift through the year, so the departure time is likely to change with the season.
Private Charters Around the Family Islands
Wildside Adventures Half-Day Charter
Wildside Adventures is a Mission Beach operator best known for its Dunk Island snorkelling tours and Tully River rafting. Its half-day charter from Mission Beach runs for about 4 hours on the vessel Wild Tornado and is listed from AU$1,500.
- Up to 10 people.

Which Option Suits You?
- Couples on a budget: the shared Mission Beach Adventures sunset cruise gives you the view, a drink and something to eat for a per-person price.
- Celebrations and groups of 10 or more: the QuickCoast sunset dinner or luncheon cruise works out more reasonably when the charter price is split across a larger group, and dinner is included.
- Small groups who want to swim and explore: Wildside Adventures or Mission Beach Charters give you more time in the water and a flexible route.
- A full luxury day: the QuickCoast outer reef and Dunk Island charter covers both reef and island in one private trip.
Where Do Mission Beach Cruises Depart From?
Most cruises and charters around the Family Islands leave from Clump Point, at the northern end of Mission Beach. QuickCoast uses the Clump Point Marine Facility, while Wildside Adventures departs from the Clump Point boat ramp rather than the jetty, so check which one your booking refers to.
Dunk Island ferries and water taxis also leave from Mission Beach. If you’d rather spend a full day on the island itself, see our guide to the Dunk Island ferry and water taxi options, including Mission Beach Ferry trips and charters.
Best Time for a Sunset Cruise in Mission Beach
The dry season, roughly May to October, brings the most settled weather and is peak season, so book ahead. Humpback whales pass along the coast from about June to September, and Wildside Adventures notes whale watching is possible on its charters in season.
The wet season, from November to April, is quieter but hotter and more humid, with a higher chance of trips being changed for weather. Sunset times move through the year, so confirm your departure time when you book.
Safety on the Water
Marine stinger season in Far North Queensland runs from November to May. According to the Cassowary Coast Regional Council, Mission Beach and South Mission Beach both have stinger nets. If you plan to swim or snorkel during the season:
- Wear a stinger suit. Ask your operator whether suits are supplied.
- Swim inside stinger enclosures at the beach.
- If someone is stung, pour vinegar on the sting, call 000, and use the vinegar stations found on many local beaches.
Around the reef and islands, use reef-safe sunscreen and don’t touch or stand on coral. On land, don’t swim in rivers, creeks or murky water because of crocodiles, and if you see a cassowary, give it plenty of space and never feed it.
