What Is Luminous Gladstone?
Luminous is a multi-award-winning light and art spectacular, transforming the Gladstone Tondoon Botanic Gardens into a kaleidoscope of colour over its magical nights.
It’s been growing in ambition and audience year after year, drawing visitors from across Queensland and beyond who make the pilgrimage to Gladstone each July specifically for this event.
The multi-award-winning Luminous is a mesmerising visual event featuring impressive lighting displays, illuminated art, live music, roving entertainment, delicious treats, workshops, children’s activities and more.

What makes Luminous so special is its setting.
Voted as one of Australia’s best botanic gardens by Australian Geographic, this peaceful parkland features 83 hectares of natural gardens showcasing over 3,000 species of predominantly native plants, surrounding the still waters of Lake Tondoon.

Luminous will showcase new interactive and engaging lighting displays, live entertainment, roving performances, workshops, children’s activities, food and music.
Previous editions have also featured LED mini golf, UV glow activities, face painting, and an 18+ glow bar for the adults who want to extend the evening. There is genuinely something here for every age group — from wide-eyed toddlers to glow-drink-in-hand grown-ups.

About Tondoon Botanic Gardens
If you haven’t visited Tondoon before, the festival is a brilliant excuse to get acquainted with one of Central Queensland’s great natural assets.
Opened in 1988, the gardens feature tropical, sub-tropical and dry rainforest flora from the Port Curtis, South East Queensland and Far North Queensland regions, including some endangered species.
Take a stroll around the Japanese Tea Gardens and the numerous walking tracks throughout the gardens, and discover superbly cultivated gardens nestled into Mount Biondello. Lake Tondoon, situated in the centre of the gardens, once provided the source of Gladstone’s water supply until 1945 — today, the lake provides a habitat for a variety of freshwater birds.
At night, with light installations reflected in the lake’s still surface, it is nothing short of spectacular.
Tondoon Botanic Gardens is located approximately 7km (or 11 minutes’ drive) from Gladstone’s CBD.
Getting to Luminous: Parking & Access
By car: Free car parking is available at the Meteors Sports Ground and the industry carpark, both within walking distance of the gardens.
Carpooling is strongly encouraged
given the volume of visitors across the four nights.
By public transport:
To get to the Gardens via public transport, catch CDC Gladstone’s 500 bus service from central Gladstone locations such as Stockland, the Hospital or TAFE to Dixon Drive (at Covill Court) and then walk for just under 1 kilometre to the park’s entrance.
Taxis and rideshare are also readily available throughout the festival.

How to Get to Gladstone from Brisbane
Gladstone is well-connected and easier to reach than many visitors expect — making a long weekend around Luminous a very achievable plan from anywhere in Queensland.
By air:
Virgin Australia and Qantas fly from Brisbane Airport (BNE) to Gladstone Airport (GLT) every 4 hours.
Non-stop, the flight from Brisbane to Gladstone takes about 1 hour 10 minutes.
The airport is
approximately seven kilometres from the CBD — about ten minutes by car.
By car:
It takes approximately 6 hours 18 minutes to drive from Brisbane to Gladstone.
The drive north along the Bruce Highway is a pleasant one, particularly through the Sunshine Coast hinterland and up through Bundaberg and Miriam Vale.
By train:
Queensland Rail Travel operates a train from Roma Street to Gladstone twice daily. Tickets cost $40–$1,332 and the journey takes 6 hours 30 minutes.
