What Is Magnetic Island Race Week?

The 19th Annual SeaLink Magnetic Island Race Week offers first-class racing on the crystal blue waters of Cleveland Bay, following on from the Airlie Beach and Hamilton Island Race Weeks as the finale of the Queensland Season of Sailing.

Magnetic Island, situated off the coast of Townsville within the World Heritage Listed Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, plays host to the regatta in the backyard of this beautiful tropical paradise.

It’s a setting that no purpose-built marina complex can replicate — you’re sailing in a national park, within sight of forested granite headlands and fringing coral reefs.

Since the event’s inauguration in 2008, the organisers have grown deeply connected with the island and its people, turning Race Week into a genuine community celebration rather than just a competitive fixture. That balance between elite sailing and grassroots festivity is exactly what keeps people coming back.

The Sailing Program: What Happens on the Water

Racing Schedule

Registration opens at Peppers Blue on Blue Race Headquarters on Thursday 27 August, with the first race starting no earlier than 11:00am on Friday 28 August from outside Nelly Bay, Magnetic Island.

The last race of the series is scheduled for Wednesday 2 September 2026.

SMIRW is run by Townsville Yacht Club and centred on Peppers Blue on Blue Resort, which hosts race headquarters. The start line sits about a five-minute motor from the resort, making for a beautifully compact racing hub where spectators on the resort deck can watch the fleet pour out of the bay.

Racing Divisions

SMIRW accepts a range of divisions to suit mixed fleets: Spinnaker, Non-Spinnaker, Multihull, Trailable and Sports Boats.

More specifically:

  • Spinnaker and Non-Spinnaker classes compete under handicap; the Multihull fleet brings fast, tactical starts with wide course options; Trailable yachts are parked on trailer with a discounted entry fee; and Sports Boats race short course, high-intensity formats.

SMIRW remains the final stop on the Northern Queensland regatta circuit, offering mixed classes and at-sea formats that include the popular Round the Island race. The course design takes advantage of local tidal patterns and island geography, offering both tactical coastal legs and breeze-driven reaching legs.

The Social Program: It’s Not Just About Sailing

You don’t need to be a competitive sailor to participate — there is something available for everyone, whether it be jumping onboard a racing yacht or partying after dark with the crews at one of the social functions.

Here’s a taste of what the 2026 social calendar looks like, based on confirmed events from the official program:

Thursday 27 August – Welcome Night

Race Week kicks off with registration at Peppers Race HQ from 1–5 pm, followed by Yachties Hour and the Skippers Briefing on the deck. As the sun sets, live band Shots Fired gets the party started.

Friday 29 August – Tan Lines Distilling Race Day

Start the day with a free community breakfast at Nelly Bay Terminal from 6–9 am alongside a Star 106.3 live broadcast.

This is a brilliant free option for families arriving on the early ferry — grab a bacon and egg roll and watch the fleet prepare.

Saturday 30 August – Star 106.3 Leisurely Long Lunch

Peppers Blue on Blue Resort hosts the Star 106.3 Leisurely Long Lunch, a ticketed fundraising event that in previous years has raised $4,000 for causes including women’s mental health and Townsville’s Perinatal Mental Health Unit.

Sunday 31 August – Townsville Airport Island Breeze Festival (Lay Day)

The lay day is the highlight for non-sailing visitors and families.

A big day at Picnic Bay features artisan markets, food stalls, kids’ activities, and scenic flights from 9 am–2 pm, plus live music by the Godfathers of Funk from 12–5 pm. Highlights include the Sand Castle Competition, the Great Inflatable Race, and mud crab races raising funds for the MI Koala Hospital.

The Magnetic Island Men’s Shed also hosts a free Community Breakfast, cooking and serving over 400 free bacon and egg sandwiches

— a local tradition that perfectly captures the warm-hearted spirit of this event.

Monday 1 September – Hawaiian Crew Party

Kick off the evening with Yachties Hour, then enjoy the Hawaiian-themed crew party with Boosted DJ on the Peppers HQ Deck.

Even if you’re not racing, this is the night to join the celebrations.

Tuesday 2 September – Townsville City Council Race Day

A relaxed final racing night featuring Yachties Hour and live entertainment.

The atmosphere winds down beautifully as the fleet reflects on a week of racing.

Wednesday 3 September – Presentation Night

The week wraps up in style with the Peppers Presentation Dinner from 5:30–7:30 pm and official Race Week Presentations from 7–8 pm.

Magnetic Island Race Week for Spectators: What You Need to Know

Race Week stretches across seven days of festivities, with the island hosting a full calendar of entertainment, live music, dining events, and community celebrations. Whether you’re a keen sailor, a passionate spectator, or just looking for an unforgettable time on Magnetic Island, this is the week to circle on your calendar.

The best free spectator spots are:

  1. The Peppers Blue on Blue Deck – Watch the fleet depart and return with a cold drink in hand. This is Race HQ and the social hub of the entire event.
  2. Nelly Bay Harbour – The marina precinct puts you right among the boats.

Sport boats and trailable boats are stored daily at the Nelly Bay Harbour Precinct, so the action starts before the racing even does.

  1. Picnic Bay Foreshore – Head here for the Island Breeze Festival on Sunday 31 August. It’s free entry, family-friendly, and the best community event of the entire week.

The Queensland Islands don’t get much more alive than this. Explore more Queensland tours to combine with your Race Week visit.

Getting to Magnetic Island for Race Week

From Townsville

Townsville’s transport connections make Magnetic Island accessible for interstate and international competitors, with easy transfers between Townsville and the island.

The SeaLink passenger ferry departs Townsville’s Breakwater Terminal and takes approximately 20 minutes to reach Nelly Bay — it’s the same SeaLink that sponsors the race.

Ferry schedules between Townsville and Magnetic Island should be checked in advance during peak regatta dates, as boats fill up quickly, especially on Island Breeze Festival Sunday when visitors flock across from the mainland.

From Interstate

Townsville provides the main transport link, with domestic flights and road access making Magnetic Island an easy addition to a broader Northern Queensland itinerary.

Fly into Townsville Airport and you’re a short cab or bus ride from the ferry terminal. Cairns visitors can make a brilliant road trip of the drive south through the Atherton Tablelands.

Where to Stay During Race Week

Berthing capacity at Peppers Blue on Blue Resort and the adjacent marina directly determines the maximum fleet for SMIRW, which tells you all you need to know about how popular Peppers is as a base. If you want to stay right at Race HQ, book months ahead.

Beyond Peppers, Magnetic Island has a solid range of accommodation across Nelly Bay, Arcadia, and Horseshoe Bay — from beachfront apartments to eco-cabins.

Many participants extend their stay to enjoy local tourism: snorkelling, island walks and reef trips are popular pre- or post-regatta options.

Things to Do Beyond the Racing

One of the great joys of Race Week is that Magnetic Island itself is extraordinary. You don’t need to be anywhere near a boat to have a brilliant time. Some highlights for the week:

  • The Forts Walk –Take the Forts Walk to see World War II ruins and amazing views over the Coral Sea — it’s also a great place to see a koala in the wild.
  • Snorkelling & Reef Tours – Hop on board and discover the underwater world by taking a tour around the fringing reefs, or out to the Great Barrier Reef, with a variety of on-water tours from eco adventures to fishing and family fun.

Browse Queensland beaches and coastal experiences to plan your days.

  • Horseshoe Bay – The island’s largest beach is a short bus ride away and offers stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, and the most spectacular sunsets you’ll find this side of the Whitsundays.
  • Rock Wallabies at Arcadia –

Visit the friendly rock wallabies at the end of Old Jetty Road, opposite the Arcadia Village Hotel.

  • Nelly Bay Markets – Browse local artisan stalls, especially lively during race week with the influx of visitors to the island.

Tips for Making the Most of Race Week 2026

  1. Book accommodation early. The island fills up fast — particularly Peppers Blue on Blue. Don’t wait until July.
  2. Check ferry times in advance.

Ferry schedules between Townsville and Magnetic Island should be checked in advance during peak regatta dates.

  1. Go to the Island Breeze Festival. Even if you only visit for one day, Sunday 31 August at Picnic Bay is the event’s big free public day — it’s spectacular for families.
  2. Hire a scooter or hop the bus. Magnetic Island is 52 km² of national park. Get mobile and explore beyond Nelly Bay.
  3. Extend your trip.

Many teams combine the regatta with extended holidays, taking advantage of local attractions, fishing opportunities, and nearby marinas.

A couple of days before or after Race Week on a quiet island is a very different — and equally wonderful — experience.

Why Magnetic Island Race Week Is Worth the Trip

There aren’t many events in Queensland that manage to be simultaneously a serious competitive sailing regatta AND a community festival that welcomes the whole island.

SeaLink Magnetic Island Race Week is supported by Townsville City Council through Townsville Enterprise, and that local pride shows in every aspect of the program — from the free community breakfast to the fundraising events for the Koala Hospital.

North Queensland is becoming one of Australia’s premier sailing destinations, and the 19th Annual SeaLink Magnetic Island Race Week is the grand finale of the Queensland Season of Sailing.

There’s nowhere better to witness it than from the deck of Peppers, watching coloured sails light up Cleveland Bay on a warm August afternoon.

Plan your trip to Magnetic Island now and book your Queensland tours well ahead — Race Week 2026 is going to be spectacular.
